Classroom Spotlight
Q: I have a lot of English language learners in my classroom. What can I do to help them?

A: I have been working with English learners since my first year teaching at an international school in South America. Most recently, I created an English Language Development program for McGraw-Hill and helped write the curriculum for a language school in Shanghai, China. I think Diane August (author of the National Panel Report on Developing Literacy in Second-language Learners) is doing some of the most exciting and groundbreaking work in this area. You can learn more about her instructional techniques and strategies by going to the Center for Applied Linguistics website at http://www.cal.org/create/about/Bio-August.html.
